HISTORY OF WINE GROWING
Although growth of grapevines is a natural process, there are procedures used to altar and improve the quality of the vines for the purpose of wine making. Vines exposed to even sunlight produce more flowers with higher bud fruitfulness. Vines that have less exposure to the sun are persistent and successful over longer periods of time however has less productivity for wine making. This is where it is important for the winemakers to domesticate their vines in order to have a more efficient vineyard.
The aim of viticulture is to maximize fruit production, not long term growth. This is achieved by providing support for the vines and arranging canopies to maximize exposure to sunlight. Pruning is necessary to maximize budding and reduce vegetative growth. These factors along with soil fertility and irrigation are controllable however climatic change is not. This is why the process of viticulture is needed to encourage the growth of successful vines.
